As demand for energy continues to surge, the energy sector is confronted with the twin challenge of meeting growing needs while transitioning to low-carbon alternatives.
Challenges and Trends
Challenges for the energy sector lie at the heart of the climate challenge. The way our energy is generated – both electricity and fuel for engines – is the foundational issue for achieving net zero emissions promised by governments across the planet. If our sources of energy remain high carbon, then efficiency improvements by energy users will not be sufficient to achieve our carbon neutrality targets.
The energy challenge is particularly acute for Singapore, an island city-state which faces land constraints. Utility companies in Singapore will therefore have to search for innovative ways to unlock Singapore’s renewable energy potential to aid the country’s low-carbon transition.
